Education is the surest instrument of social transformation.
For over a century, the Bharatiya Lingayat Development Educational Association (BLDEA) has stood as proof of what a single conviction can build across generations. In 1910, Dr. P. G. Halakatti, revered as Vachana Pitamaha, a scholar and social reformer devoted to the Shiva Sharana philosophy, founded this Association on a simple but radical belief: that education is the surest instrument of social transformation.
At a time when learning was the privilege of a few, Dr. Halakatti envisioned schools open to every child, regardless of caste, creed, sect or gender. In 1926, Poojya Sri Sanganabasava Shivayogi Banthanala Swamiji answered his call to strengthen this young institution, building schools, free hostels and community facilities across Vijayapura. At his request, Smt. Bangaramma Sajjan donated 45 acres of land in 1942, land that grew into what is today BLDEA's main campus, named in her honour. That spirit found its scale under Shri B. M. Patil, who grew the Association from local schools into professional colleges of engineering, medicine, pharmacy and nursing, and it found new heights when we established BLDE (Deemed to be University) in 2008, bringing world class higher education to North Karnataka.
Today, BLDEA nurtures over 75 institutions and 36,000 students across Vijayapura and Bagalkot, yet our founding mission remains unchanged: to use education as a tool for social transformation, to empower women and the historically marginalised, and to reduce inequality in access to learning.
To the young people who walk through our classrooms and campuses today, I want to say this: you are the inheritors of a promise made over a century ago by people who had far less than you do, yet dared to dream bigger. Carry forward that same spirit of service, curiosity and courage. Use the opportunities before you not only to build your own future, but to lift those around you, just as our founders intended for theirs.
